Two finnish designers, Essi Kuula and Marika Jylhä are forming together a creative footwear and accessories studio. Their work is a lot about experiments, but always also respecting the traditions of well made objects. In their design playfulness and sculptural forms meets beautiful combination of natural materials.
Kuula + Jylhä shoes and accessories are made in Helsinki + Tallinn with time and passion. Collections consists of unique pieces and small series.
"Important values for us are open and honest production line, natural materials and slow handmade design. We are not following the traditional seasonal thinking of the fashion world. We have our on pace, which means possibly one collection per year and few unique models in between collections. From there comes our slogan ”Slow Shoes”.
Footwear design is like architecture for the feet. You are essentially building a home, preferably one that is functional and comfortable. It’s very challenging to combine that functionality with our often complex aesthetic, but we love the challenge. We love those little moments of realization, when we’ve been struggling with a design problem and suddenly realize how to solve it. That moment when you see the objects you have only imagined transform into reality is really amazing. We want to produce little footwear adventures to the people. Our aim is to stretch the boundaries of the footwear design and also the boundaries inside our own heads for what footwear design should be."
From our design team Kuula is living in Helsinki, Finland and Jylhä in Tallinn, Estonia. As a result we have design studios both in Helsinki and Tallinn and the designing and producing of our products is naturally happening in between these two cities.
The uppers of our shoes are sewn at our own studio and the soles are attached by local cobbler. Bags and other accessories are sewn besides at our own studio, also at a small bag factory a stone’s throw away from our Tallinn studio. The wooden parts of our products are made by local carpenter from Northern Ostrobothnia, Finland.
Materials are acquired as close as possible. Our leathers come from Italy and Spain and in our wooden parts we use mostly finnish birch, aspen and rowan.
